COGS Recertification Election FAQs What is the recertification election? A new election where all members of the bargaining unit (COGS members or not) must vote to keep the union as the bargaining representative for the purposes of a legally binding union contract. negotiating Who can vote? All teaching/research assistants at UI who have 25% or greater appointments in Fall 2020. *Grad students on Fellowship are not eligible to vote.  Why hold a recertification election? In the spring of 2017, Iowa State Legislature passed legislation requiring public-sector unions to face recertification prior to negotiations of every new contract. How many votes do we need to win? A majority of the bargaining unit must vote YES on recertification. Bargaining Unit= about 2100 Grad Students When will this take place? October 13-27, 2020. Voting will be open online and by telephone. Why vote YES? A YES vote means (you) wish to maintain COGS as the negotiating representatives for a new union contract. You are not required to join COGS. All bargaining unit members must vote. Failing to vote results in a NO vote.
